Registration

New Student Check-in at PSU:
New students must check in at the IELP Office, take the IELP Placement Test, and attend the New Student Orientation. Students are required to attend classed the first week.

Students who arrive late and miss the placement test, registration day, or the first week of classes may not be admitted until the following term.

New international students (with F-1 and J-1 visas) are required to check in with PSU's International Student Services Office, (located in East Hall, room 101) within the first 2 weeks of class. Bring the following items with you to the International Student Service Office:

  • Passport
  • White I-94 Form/card
  • I-20 or DS-2019 Form
  • Medical insurance information
  • Local contact information (address and telephone number).

Class Registration
The IELP Office will assist all students with class registration during the New Student Orientation and on the returning students registration day.

Visa Requirements
All F-1 and J-1 international students are required to enroll in and complete a full-time course of study at Portland State University each term (except during a vacation term).

Exceptions to this requirement must be approved by the IELP International Student Advisor BEFORE class registration.

Non-credit IELP courses

  • Students who are enrolled in the non-credit Intensive English Language Program (IELP) will be registered for five (5) non-credit classes, listed as LING 099.
  • Non-credit courses are listed permanently on a student's PSU academic record as zero (0) credit, with a grade mark of AU, except for the elective class, which receives a grade of A-F.
  • Non-credit courses cannot be applied towards PSU's degree requirements.
  • The IELP Office will issue separate grade reports at the end of the term to students taking non-credit classes.

PSU admitted students

  • ESL students who are admitted or conditionally admitted to PSU will be registered for four (4), 3-credit, ESL classes,and one (1), 2-credit class, (for a total of 14 credits).
  • Credit-bearing ESL classes are listed as LING 110.
  • LING 110 courses CAN be applied (as elective credits) towards PSU undergraduate degree requirements.
