How to Apply

Applying to the IELP is easy. Just follow these steps!

Complete and submit each of the following documents that apply to your situation. (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these forms.)

Which type of student are you?

International students (full-time applicants requiring an F-1 or J-1 student visa): follow steps 1 - 8 below.

U.S. residents or other international applicants who do not need an F-1 or J-1 visa: contact the IELP Office for special application instructions and about the reduced application fee for part-time students. Forms to complete: Measles Vaccination form and Quick Entry form.

Note: The Intensive English Language Program (IELP) is a self-support program; the staff fee privilege (reduced tuition for spouses or relatives of PSU staff members) does not apply to courses offered through the IELP.

IELP Application Instructions

1. IELP Application and $125 Application fee.

Be sure to mark the box for the term in which you wish to begin your study (your admission term).

Print this form and write in your information, *or* complete the form using your computer and then print it.

This form includes two parts:

  • IELP Application
  • Declaration of Finances

Students who plan to apply for an F-1 or J-1 student visa must complete both forms.

Non-F-1/J-1 visa applicants can skip the Declaration of Finances section

2. Evidence of Financial Resources

Required for applicants who plan to reside in the U.S. with an F-1 or J-1 visa.

Please submit an official form or letter from your bank (or financial supporter) showing you have enough financial support for your stay in the USA.

If someone living the USA is sponsoring you or providing financial support, an Affidavit of Support Form will be needed. The Affidavit of Support Instructions will explain what is needed and how to fill out this form.

3. Proof of secondary school completion in original language and in English.

This can be an official copy of your graduation diploma/certificate or official academic transcript, from either your high school or university.

4. Complete the Measles Vaccination Form

5. A copy of your passport identification photo page.

6. Transfer Clearance Form (SEVIS Transfer)

Required for applicants who are currently in the U.S. with an F-1 or J-1 visa.

9. Health Insurance Requirement

IELP students are required to purchase the extended health insurance policy, during each term of study, provided by Portland State University.  Students will be covered by a comprehensive health insurance policy and will also be able to use the Student Health and Counseling Center on the PSU campus.  For more information and fee schedule go to http://oia.pdx.edu/intl_students/insurance/
